March 2012 Issue 3   Volume 1 CREA logo

Back to the Future at CREA's AGM >>>

Last week our industry took a quantum leap by approving the Futures strategic plan, which you can find here. Nearly 400 representatives from Boards and Associations across the country came together at the Annual General Meeting to debate, discuss and provide feedback on the plan. Also approved was an outreach program to members, designed to capture your input and consideration as we move forward.

In addition to the futures vote, elections were also held for the CREA Board of Directors and the Board chose its new executive. The 2012 President of the Canadian Real Estate Association is Wayne Moen, of Edmonton Alberta. He is a salesperson with Re/Max River City in Edmonton, and has over 35 years' experience in residential, commercial and industrial real estate. Congratulations Wayne! You can find a complete list of the Board and Executive here.

Did someone mention FINTRAC?

In fact, FINTRAC is in the news lately for a couple reasons.

Parliament is currently conducting a mandatory five year review of the money laundering and terrorist financing regime. In this context, the Department of Finance has proposed and is consulting on new FINTRAC regulations. They are not a done deal.

CREA's Federal Affairs committee composed of your REALTOR® colleagues, has expressed concerns in two submissions in recent months to the government. The Parliamentary review is a chance to assess proposed measures against standards of reasonableness and practicality. It also allows REALTORS® to address specific challenges and moderate the compliance burden. CREA recently appeared before the Senate committee conducting the review to highlight our industry's concerns, Gary Simonsen's comments can be found here.
