Ahhh, summer time in Ottawa, who needs a sauna! >>>

Futures Implementation Team (FIT) members gathered in Ottawa a couple weeks ago for their monthly meeting to execute the futures plan approved by the membership at this year's Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Most FIT members came from sane cities and climates where summer means you can have fun outside without melting or needing a respirator, unlike Ottawa. Despite the heat and humidity, the team managed to plow through a busy agenda and took some critical decisions.

First, one of the early deliverables outlined in the Strategy Map is the implementation of a consumer research panel, in order for organized real estate to better understand consumer needs and wants. After a presentation from a preeminent pollster the FIT recommended that CREA proceed with the establishment of a national consumer panel. The panel will be up and running in late summer and a proposal will be presented to the Fall SGM for Boards and Associations to participate in surveys using the panel.

Second, an Association management expert presented to FIT about operating structure and governance models. The wide-ranging presentation outlined the key ideas that must be considered as the FIT develops recommendations to optimize operating and governance structures. A working group was struck to progress the proposals in the Strategy Map. Its efforts will include outlining suggested roles, responsibilities and relationships of local boards, provincial Associations and CREA.

Finally, one of the most talked-about recommendations in the Strategy Map is the proposal to "evaluate if and how best we can make FSBO and non-MLS® data available on" At the meeting last week, legal advice from external counsel was presented by CREA's lawyers, and the implications discussed. The FIT determined there were no practical options for making FSBO and non-MLS® data available on without significant risks to the REALTOR® and MLS® trademarks. Moreover, no business case was identified which would be sufficiently compelling to justify the risk of putting FSBO data on As such, the FIT recommends against putting FSBO and non-MLS® information on

These are exciting times to be part of Organized Real Estate as the Futures plan moves ahead – collectively we are making changes to give REALTORS® the tools and information they need to meet the demands of tomorrow's consumer.

For those of you not up to speed on the Futures plan, please take the time to read the Strategy Map. There is lots of mis-information and dis-information out there and all of us have a responsibility to know the facts. In the next month, we will be reaching out to all members with videos and a series of questions to get their views and input on next steps. I hope you all take the time to express you opinion.

I wish you all a safe, happy and productive summer!

The app now available!
Similar to the app, the app allows Apple devices to find commercial properties across Canada. The app provides all the functionality of the website — search, find a REALTOR®, bookmark properties — in addition to using the smartphone's GPS to find available properties near the user/device.

iPhone App

The app is available via the Apple Store.

News2Me will not be published in August, but we'll be back in September.

Mobile Front

CREA has been busy developing smartphone apps and services demanded by REALTORS® and consumers alike.

In June, CREA launched for smartphone and tablet browsers. This version takes advantage of a tablet or smartphone's web browser (so no need to download an app) and features the functionality REALTORS® and consumers have come to expect from Canada's number one real estate website – Until the update scheduled for the fall, you'll have to type into your smartphone/tablet to access the service.

For those working on the commercial side of real estate, the app also launched in late-July (see sidebar).

And last, but not least, an iPad version of the app will be launched in September.

So, how successful have we been so far with our apps? See the chart below:
