September 2012 Issue 8   Volume 1 CREA logo

September is……….. >>>

When kids go back to school, when commuter traffic gets annoying again, when leaves start to turn, when the House of Commons opens its fall session, when Apple® releases another product…this time a new iPhone®, when I can't wait for Christmas.

All of the above are true, and September is also time for CREA to update all of you about our busy summer.

With MPs coming back to the House of Commons, it's time to start ramping up REALTOR® political action. Our fall lobbying priorities have gone to Boards and Associations, and Political Action Committee representatives. REALTORS® have a strong record successfully lobbying the government.

Many clients have used money from their RRSP to buy a new home. The program is called the Home Buyers Program (HBP). It was conceptualized and developed by CREA and REALTORS® in Ottawa. The HBP was introduced as a temporary measure in 1992. Through successful lobbying it was made permanent in 1994. Initially withdrawals were limited to $20,000 however, in 2009, CREA successfully lobbied to increase the limit to $25,000. Over 2 million Canadians have used the program to date. A full list of our lobbying accomplishments is too long to list, but a few include; REALTORS® can now access certain unemployment insurance benefits, through two rounds of mortgage financing rule changes there has been no increase to the minimum downpayment, mortgage disclosure rules have been strengthened, anti-spam legislation was successfully amended to preserve REALTOR® marketing practices.

While Apple® is on the mind of many consumers, it's been on CREA's mind all summer as the tech team worked to finalize the new iPad® app for The app was released earlier this month and iTunes® promptly made it an editor's choice, something reserved for only the best apps — so far it's been downloaded 35,000+ times and growing.

Walk Score®
... integrated into

Johnny Cash 'walked the line,' Dionne Warwick 'walked on by,' Katrina & The Waves 'walked on sunshine.'

Now, with the integration of Walk Score® into, consumers will be able to assess the walkability of any address so that they can go 'walking after midnight,' 'walk on the wild side,' 'walk this way,' go 'walking in the rain'…

So, how does Walk Score® work?

Walk Score® helps REALTORS®, home and property buyers assess how walkable a neighbourhood is by assigning a number between 0 and 100 that measures the walkability of any address. Check it out!
