Homebuyers'
Road Map:
a tool for you to use
with clients >>>

The average price of a home in Canada is $358,000. The average family income is about $77,000.

Buying a property is clearly a significant commitment and REALTORS® have a critical role to play advising clients about the biggest financial decision of their lives.

For these reasons, CREA collaborated with the Government of Canada and the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) to produce a pamphlet and online widget to help consumers make informed financial decisions when buying property. The pamphlet is entitled "Homebuyers' Road Map" and takes the consumer from assessing financial readiness to buy a property, through six other critical steps, concluding with closing and related costs.

The pamphlet and widget are tools REALTORS® can use to highlight their value as professionals involved in a significant financial transaction. It also arms REALTORS® with an educational tool for clients to help potential buyers understand the financial implications of home ownership.

CREA CEO Gary Simonsen announced the collaboration Monday morning at a news conference with the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, Shelly Glover, and Ursula Menke, Commissioner of the FCAC. Have a look at the press release and the video from the launch event.

The collaboration speaks to the credibility REALTORS® have established through ongoing engagement with the government over several years of successful PAC Days and individual MP meetings. It is rare for the government to partner with private sector groups to help inform and educate consumers, and REALTORS® should be proud of this accomplishment. Further, it demonstrates the federal government values REALTORS®' engagement on financial literacy and that it sees organized real estate as a key player in the dialogue with consumers.

Copies of the pamphlet will be sent to Boards and Associations across the country. It is also available as a PDF. The widget code can be found here should you wish to embed it on your website. A button to link to the widget hosted on crea.ca is also available here should you wish to place it on your site.
