Nominate a fellow REALTOR® for the Canadian REALTORS Care® Award 2017 Proudly Presented by REM
The Canadian REALTORS Care® Award 2017 Proudly Presented by REM is open for nominations! Now is the time to recognize a fellow REALTOR® who dedicates their time to volunteering or raising funds for charity.
Who is eligible? If you'd describe a fellow REALTOR® as "inspirational," "selfless," "committed" or "passionate," they would make an excellent candidate for a Canadian REALTORS Care® Award.
This Award is our industry's way of recognizing outstanding REALTORS® who've done incredible things over the past year and sharing their inspirational stories with the REALTOR® Community at large.
You may remember the inspirational story of inaugural award winner, Vince Mirabelli of Thunder Bay. His commitment to helping children and their families in his hometown stands as an excellent example of the many ways REALTORS® across Canada give back.
You have until December 2, 2016, to nominate a deserving REALTOR®—or REALTORS®—for the Canadian REALTORS Care® Award 2017 Proudly Presented by REM. Learn more about the award and download our nomination form now.
The winner will be announced at CREA's 2017 AGM in March and presented with a $5,000 donation to their favourite charity.

REALTOR® PAC Reps take to Parliament Hill
Each year, hundreds of REALTORS® from across the country come to Ottawa for CREA's annual Political Action Committee (PAC) Days advocacy conference. Attendees – called 'PAC Reps' – hear from political experts and elected officials and bring our industry's REALTOR® recommendations to their Members of Parliament (MPs).
This year we'll be discussing our recommendations to extend and modernize the popular government program the Home Buyers' Plan (HBP).
The first recommendation asks the government to index the HBP to ensure it keeps pace with inflation. Between 1992 and 2008 the HBP lost more than 25% of its purchasing power to inflation. In 2009, the maximum withdrawal amount was increased by $5,000, which helped but still did not bring the program's purchasing power back to the original 1992 levels. Since 2009, it has lost another 10% of it purchasing power to inflation.
The second recommendation asks the government to extend the HBP to help vulnerable Canadians maintain homeownership. Currently, Canadians going through a divorce, the loss of a spouse, job relocation or decision to bring an elderly family member into their home may not be able to purchase a home that suits their change in circumstances. The HBP can help ease affordability concerns by allowing them to borrow from their own savings.
CREA joins call for International Property Measurement Standards
This fall CREA's Board of Directors agreed to become a "Partner" of the International Property Measurement Standards (IPMS) for Office Buildings.
Currently, property measurement practices are highly localised and do not offer the transparency and consistency required in a global marketplace. Research has shown floor space measurements can vary up to 24%. For example, in some parts of the world it is established practice to include common space like elevator shafts and communal hallways in floor area measurements; while in others off-site parking might be included.
Therefore, the Standards were developed in response to mounting evidence which suggests current measurement practices are leading to confusion and uncertainty in property and financial markets.
Measurement standards will help you more easily compare properties, prices and speak to the value of international properties.
CREA, along with other professional organizations such as BOMA Canada and the Appraisal Institute, will support the approach to international standards development by informing members of the existence of the IPMS (Office Buildings) and by promoting the benefits of international collaboration. The standards are available at no cost on the IPMS website, and can be used on a voluntary basis by REALTORS®.
The IPMS was developed by a coalition of 70+ professional organizations from around the world, including the International Consortium of Real Estate Associations (ICREA), which represented the interest of CREA on the IPMS coalition.
