Warm Wishes to You and Yours

Fast-paced. Competing priorities. High stress. Oh, you thought I was describing life as a REALTOR®? More like anticipating the holidays!

Okay, maybe that's not entirely true, but it's hard not to draw parallels between what we do on a regular basis and this wonderful time of year.

As your 2016 President, I spent a large portion of my year on the road (and in the air), travelling across the country to meet with new and familiar faces at Open Houses, meetings, tradeshows and events. In fact, I'm inclined to believe REALTORS® may be especially equipped to deal with all the festive fun given how "on the go" we are the majority of the year. But, come December, two things still always seem to amaze me. First, how is the year already over? And second, how did we fit so much into 12 short months?

This year was a particularly busy one and it wasn't just because of my role as CREA President (although, I'm sure that played a part). In different provinces (new foreign buyers tax), across the country (new mortgage regulations) and even internationally (*gulp* the U.S. election *gulp*), it seems 2016 was a year of change. And, no matter your opinion on any of these changes, I think one of the biggest takeaways is the importance and influence of collective voice. That's why, at the top of my wish list to Santa, I'm asking one thing: if you haven't already, please add your voice in support of issues impacting REALTORS®, Canadian homebuyers and sellers by joining the REALTOR® Action Network. If the record attendance at this year's Political Action (PAC) Days in October is any indication, I'm not alone in believing we can make a greater impact when we come together and speak cohesively as one!

More importantly, there aren't too many other gifts that are quite as productive and long-lasting … while also only taking a few seconds to finish.

Of course, a lot more has happened over the course of the year and I hope you'll spend some of your hard-earned downtime catching up on the great things your national association has been working towards on your behalf.

That reminds me. At the beginning of the summer, I issued a productivity challenge:

  1. Update your REALTOR.ca profile,
  2. Do something charitable, and
  3. Be a mentor for a new member or join a Young Professionals Network.

And, even though the holidays are generally anything but slower, let's do it again! I'm extending this challenge into 2017 (And, I know what you're thinking but no, this doesn't count as a second item on my Santa wish list because it's actually for you and not me)!

On behalf of the CREA Board of Directors and staff, we wish you the very best this Holiday Season. Here's to another fast-paced year filled with many accomplishments, great memories and a little fun.

Okay, a lot of fun.

All the best in 2017!

Cliff
