CREA PACs Parliament Hill

The Canadian Real Estate Association's (CREA) 32nd annual Political Action Committee (PAC) Days wrapped up earlier this month with resounding success.

More than 360 REALTORS® from across Canada gathered in Ottawa to advocate for keeping homeownership accessible and within reach for all Canadians.

PAC reps took to the Hill and met with close to 200 Members of Parliament (MPs) over the course of the three-day conference. Meetings touched on a number of issues including expanding the Home Buyers' Plan (HBP), intergenerational RRSP loans for new homebuyers, and the contrast between regional housing markets.

CREA's Board of Directors also had a special opportunity to meet with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and discuss some of the important issues facing the national housing industry.

Participants also heard from a number of political pundits, policy experts, as well as current and past MPs. Minister Jean-Yves Duclos, responsible for the federal governments housing portfolio, spoke to attendees on the national housing agenda and keeping housing issues a top priority.

REALTOR® Advocacy Pays Off

Tax proposals for private corporations

CREA is applauding the government for amending its tax proposals for personal incorporation and listening to the views and concerns of our 125,000 REALTOR® members.

CREA's government relations team worked hard all summer consulting with the Department of Finance, including meeting with Finance Minister Bill Morneau.

"We were pleased to take part in the consultations and appreciate the government took time to carefully consider the feedback we offered," said CREA President Andrew Peck.

REALTORS® can incorporate in seven provinces, and incorporation is important given spouses and other family members often work together.

CREA submitted a proposal on the suggested changes focused on concerns with income sprinkling, the definition and application of "reasonableness" tests, as well as noting the passive investment income elements unfairly penalized most private corporations.
